My Panoramic Adventures

Cumbria Seascape, Watercolour, 422x300mm

I seem to have started a panoramic landscape portfolio. This idea was introduced by one of my clients that specifically asked me to paint from a panoramic photograph of his. Since then, I have been delighted that more people have asked for this type of landscape commission. I personally feel that camera/composition affects such as this, can accentuate the movement within the landscape and make the viewer feel apart of the scene, just like those Post-Impressionist paintings that I adore!

Usually I would just paint landscapes for fun but I am always happy to be paid for that pursuit! I couldn’t chose a favourite between painting animals and landscapes, because I like varied challenges.

The painting below was commissioned recently (the same area of Cumbria, England). It’s funny because I love the Lake District and seem to paint it more than I get to visit it. I am planning to go there soon and so I will definitely bring my camera with me! Anyway, I was specifically asked to crop a photo into a panoramic composition and also asked to add their dog into the image. The best of both worlds!

I have learnt through this process that I tend to accentuate the most interesting aspect of a photo, and this determines the composition and the colour palette I use. For example, the top image I over exaggerated the sky with dark hues to reflect the interesting drama of the sky. In the image below, I made the sky more subtle to highlight the interesting reflections in the middle ground. I could have drawn in the rocks, however this wouldn’t have given the image the depth of field it now has.

If anyone would like a landscape commission, please don’t be afraid to get in contact (tab at the top of this page), I would be delighted to hear from you!
